In
summary, Greenville water quality improved such that all complaints
about water quality had ended after installing the aeration
system. It was also noted that there were no longer
any odours.

CASE
#3
Greenville's
water quality prior to an installed ADS aeration system was
"dark from colour imparted by decaying organic matter.
High iron content turned household laundry brown and bleaching
attempts resulted in reactions with manganese, turning clothes
black. In addition, there was a strong odour of hydrogen
sulfide." These conditions existed despite the
water being treated in a plant employing "flocculation,
settling, rapid sand filtration, and chlorination."
The
following illustration is derived from water-quality test
results obtained prior to aeration system installation, after
4 months of operation, and again after 8 months of operation.

It
is evident that Oxygen levels increased dramatically,
especially at the lower depths. At 23 ft. initially
there was no dissolved oxygen, but after 4 months operation,
there was as much dissolved oxygen in the bottom waters
as in the surface.

|

An
80% decrease in colour was noted after 4 months of operation.
|
|

Iron
content reduced by 89%. Manganese reduced by 91%.
Turbidity was eliminated. pH remained fairly stable.
Nitrates reduced by 76%. Chlorides reduced by
41%.
